Indian gang-rape victim dies in Singapore

I first saw this story on Facebook on 22 December 2012 and thought nothing of it, dismissing it as one of those chain letter thingie that you have to pass on to 10 people.....

  1. She was a student. She was 23. She was coming back from a date with her boyfriend. Her fault: she boarded the wrong bus. And oh yeah, SHE WAS A GIRL! Six men raped her one by one. Inserted an iron rod in her and mutilated her intestines. And left her to die on the road. Naked. Wounded. Exposed. Devastated. What’s more no one even turned to look at her. No one even bothered to throw a shawl on the ...ill-clad, ill-fated girl. She can never lead a normal married life again. She has gone into coma five times since 16th December. She is unconscious, critical and hasn’t been able to stop crying. But don’t worry, she wasn’t your sister. She wasn’t your daughter. But she could be. The brutality has to stop right here guys. These people deserve a capital punishment for their heinous, pervert act. I VOTE FOR A CAPITAL PUNISHMENT! Please show her that you care. Please show her that you all are there for here. Maybe that’s all she will ever have to live by. I didn’t know her. But she is related to me by the universal bond of humanity. From a girl who doesn’t want to face the same fate

  1. MY HUMBLE REQUEST PEOPLE PLEASE COPY AND PASTE IT AS YOUR STATUS AND TELL ANYONE AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW. USE PHONE, BBM, WHATSAPP, FACEBOOK, TEXT MESSAGES. INFORM AS MANY PEOPLE YOU KNOW. DO THIS FOR HER. DO THIS FOR YOURSELF. SHE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT, NOT SYMPATHY. :|

But on today's news, she has died.  I started following this story when she was sent to Singapore for treatment....but sadly, it was too late.

The gang-rape on a bus that sickened India

After spending her evening watching "Life of Pi" in a New Delhi mall, the 23-year-old student and her male companion were looking for a quick lift home when a bus with tinted windows pulled over.
The pair were then subjected to a catalogue of violence and sexual depravity which has evoked comparisons with Anthony Burgess's novel "A Clockwork Orange" and brought simmering anger over the plight of women to the boil across India.
The Indian news channel NDTV greeted news of her death in the early hours of Saturday in a Singapore hospital with the banner headline "RIP: India's Daughter", in a reflection of how her plight had moved the nation.
Ever since she was attacked on the night of December 16, the country's leaders have lined up to offer their prayers and condemn the attack as well as paying for her treatment in Singapore.
Although the identity of the young woman has not yet been released, reports have said she was a medical student who hailed from a rural area of Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state which borders the capital New Delhi.
Her parents, who had travelled to Singapore after she was flown out by air ambulance on Wednesday night, are said to have sold their small piece of land in order to fund their daughter's education, often limiting their own meals to little more than rotis with namak (bread with salt), according to NDTV.
"These are simple, rustic people, who have never dreamt of boarding an aircraft, much less travel to a foreign country in an air ambulance," a source at the hospital told Singapore's Straits Times after meeting her relatives.
Before flying out to Singapore, the woman had managed to give an interview to police at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital about the events on the night of her attack.
Police and prosecutors have outlined how six men picked the pair up outside the mall in a school bus which they had taken for a joyride after drinking heavily.
Even before they stopped outside the mall, they had allegedly picked up another passenger and then forced him to hand over the contents of his wallet.
After getting into an argument with the woman's male companion, the group are then alleged to have lashed out at the pair before taking turns to rape the woman in the back of the bus while driving around Delhi for some 45 minutes.
They also sexually assaulted the woman with a rusting metal bar, leaving her with severe intestinal injuries, before hurling her out of the vehicle.
The bus would have had to cross numerous police checkpoints at that time of night but at no stage was the vehicle pulled over by officers.

Her name was Jyoti. I am proud of her': Father's anguish as he finally reveals identity of the Indian gang rape victim whose death horrified the world

    • Jyoti Singh Pandey died of her injuries 13 days after she was lured onto a bus where she was gang raped
    • Her father Badri Singh Pandey has agreed to reveal her name 'to give courage to other women who have survived these attacks'
    • He calls the men who carried out the attack 'beasts' and calls for them to be given the death penalty
    • Five of the accused men are expected to appear in court for pre-trial proceedings on Tomorrow
The father of the 23-year-old victim of a horrific gang rape in India has given permission for her name to be revealed for the first time today.
Badri Singh Pandey said he wants 'the world to know' the name of his daughter Jyoti, who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days after the brutal rape in New Delhi.
'I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks,' said Mr Singh Pandey. 'They will find strength from my daughter.'
The brutal attack has caused uproar in India, with mass demonstrations for women's rights and calls for the six suspects in the case to be hanged.
The distraught father made his comments in an interview with the Sunday People, given from his ancestral village of Billia in Uttar Pradesh, a state in the north of India, where the family has gone to grieve.

He said he had no desire to see the faces of the men accused of the barbaric sexual attack on his child, he wants just to see them punished and hanged.
'Death to all six of them,' he said. 'These men are beasts.
'They should be made an example of and that society will not allow such things to happen.'

Miss Singh Pandey died died on December 29 in a specialist hospital in Singapore after a 13-day struggle to survive injuries so grievous that her intestines had to be removed.
She underwent three major surgeries - including one to remove her intestines - and suffered a cardiac arrest in India before being flown to Singapore for treatment.
Mr Singh Pandey told how his daughter, despite her ordeal, wanted to go on living. As she drifted in and out of consciousness in her hospital bed, she was able to communicate with her family through written notes.
'She had a feeding pipe in her mouth making it difficult for her to speak,' he said. 'But she did write on some paper that she wanted to live, she wanted to survive and stay with us.
'But it was fate that had the last say in the end.'
Miss Singh Pandey was raped after she and a male friend, named today as Awindra Pandey, 28, were lured onto a bus as they travelled home from the cinema, where they had been to see blockbuster Life Of Pi.

Claims: Awindra Pandey, the male friend with Miss Singh Pandey when she was subjected to the brutal gang-rape ordeal, spoke out in an interview on Indian television
Claims: Awindra Pandey, the male friend with Miss Singh Pandey when she was subjected to the brutal gang-rape ordeal, spoke out in an interview on Indian television
In an interview with Hindi TV channel Zee News, Awindra Pandey said the gang of six men aboard the bus - fitted with curtains and tinted windows - had planned to trap them.
Once on the bus, he was attacked and Miss Singh Pandey was gang-raped by a group of allegedly drunk men, including the driver, who also violated her with an iron bar causing immense internal damage that lead to her death, he said.
The man, believed to be the only witness in the case, said he did his best to fight off the attackers.
'They beat us up, hit us with iron rod, snatched our clothes and belongings and they threw us off the bus on a deserted stretch.
'From where we boarded bus, they moved around for nearly two and a half hours. We were shouting, trying to make people hear us,' said the 28-year-old, who suffered a broken leg in the attack.
'But they switched off the lights. We tried to resist them. Even my friend fought with them, she tried to save me. She tried to dial police control room number 100, but the men snatched the mobile.'

The horrifying crime has appalled India and brought simmering anger about widespread crime against women to the boil amid angry calls for safer streets, more sensitive policing and changed social attitudes.
Five men and a 17-year-old boy have been formally charged over the rape and murder of the medical student after DNA tests linked them to the crime.
The men will appear in the District Court of the Saket area of New Delhi tomorrow, while the 17-year-old will be tried separately as a juvenile.

'Fake' photo of Delhi rape victim goes viral

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The father of a student in south India has complained to police after Internet users circulated a photo of his daughter on social media claiming it was the Delhi gang-rape victim, officers said Friday.
A picture tribute to the dead Delhi woman, who was repeatedly raped on a moving bus on December 16 and thrown out of the vehicle in a crime that appalled the nation, has gone viral on Facebook.
Her name and identity have been withheld by police and the media in line with a law that entitles victims of sex crime and their families to anonymity to protect them from social stigma.
Vinayakumar, an assistant commissioner in the cyber crime unit of Kerala police in south India, said that the photo used in the Facebook tribute was a fake and had caused distress.
"We have received a complaint from the father stating that the photograph uploaded on Facebook as the Delhi rape victim picture was fake," the officer, who goes by one name, told AFP.
"The picture used was his daughter's photograph uploaded with her Facebook profile. We have directed Facebook officials to delete the photograph and help us to track the culprits," he added.
