The Shanghai Book Co and the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Close

Regulars nostalgic as eight decade-old bookstore shuts its doors

Shutters down: Shanghai Book Co. KL Sdn Bhd, a bookstore in Petaling Street, has closed its doors after more than 86 years of operations
ACCOMPLISHED award-winning composer and musician Yii Kah Hoe has fond memories of Shanghai Book Co. KL Sdn Bhd, a bookstore in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur, which has closed its doors after more than 86 years of operations.
“I used to go to the bookstore during my college days as they stocked a lot of references that I needed for my coursework,” said Yii, a Fine Arts graduate who majored in Chinese ink painting.
“I went there at least once a week to get my books and Chinese orchestra music CDs. The staff were also very helpful in assisting the customers.”

Packing: Shanghai Book Co. KL Sdn Bhd was a place to source for books of various genres that were imported from China.
Yii, 42, said he made a final visit to Shanghai Book after learning about its closure only a week ago.
“I am quite sad as I feel it is a loss to the Chinese community,” said the SEGi College Subang Jaya music lecturer, who is highly acknowledged in the music circle in Malaysia and abroad.
“They stocked books of various genres that were imported from China. It will be very difficult to find similar books locally.”
However, all is not lost as it was reported in Sin Chew Daily on Monday that Shanghai Book Co. KL Sdn Bhd, will reopen the bookstore via a joint venture with a Hong Kong company called The Commercial Press (HK) Ltd.
The daily also reported that several customers were still seen knocking on its shutters even after its last day of operations on Sunday.
Many long-time customers had rushed to the bookstore in Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur, prior to its closure to grab bargains from the closing-down sales and also to cherish memories of flipping through books at the shop.
The bookstore said it would donate some of its books to community libraries.
Yii expressed hope that the re-opened bookstore would continue the concept initiated by its predecessor and bring in Chinese books of various genre for the Malaysian market.
