Batu Pahat Breakfast and Chai Tou Kueh

After the cemetery/ies' visit, it was time for breakfast in Batu Pahat. I have not had breakfast Batu Pahat (Chinese) style in about 15 years!!! We sent to this coffeeshop Lai Yi that is near the Chinese High School and the Chinese cemetery
Darren rushed to his seat, whipped out his manga books and buried his nose in them!
This is Lai Yi, where you can have breakfast the way I had when I was young and staying in BP
First, we had "POWER MEE"!!!!! I had this everyday for breakfast!!! My father's worker or my brother would go on his bicycle and buy packets of mee, mee hoon, kueh teow like this for TWENTY CENTS per packet!!!! Now, you think, 20 cents, that must have been a long time ago. Yes, it was! A very long time ago! Now the mee costs RM1 or RM1.2o with fish cake.
It is very "laku" (saleable) with lots of people waiting, and this couple working non-stop.
Pots of different types of noodles: Mee, Mee hoon, Mee Siam, Kueh Teow, Fried Rice
This is how it looks like...Mee with fish cake.....Power Mee is plain fried mee without any ingredients (so plain it only cost 20 cents) and for extra nutrition, you add fish cake
Mee Hoon with fish cake....
There were also Laksa (to Johoreans laksa means only CURRY LAKSA!!!!) and kon loh mee
Kon Loh mee or wantan mee
Johor Laksa (Chinese style, the style I used to take before I went to KL)
close up of BLOOD COCKLES..yummy, yummy, I loved cockles (the half cooked bloody type, before hepatitis reared its ugly head)
tucking in to hearty breakfast, cheap and comforting
the ultimate comfort food
my nephew, a strapping 1.80m at 16 0r 17, must be the power mee!
my other nephew and niece....with white coffee and kopi-o that my father loved.
Darren only eats chai tow kueh!!!
Chai tow kueh is "carrot cake" fried with garlic and taugeh, my favourite too when I was young!

This father and daughter are busy dishing out the chai tow kueh, I used to buy it from the roadside stall, which is very rare nowadays, because roads in Batu Pahat have become more busy.

the daughter is cutting the carrot cake into cubes while the father is frying it non-stop

Ha ha ha!!! He has finished his kon loh mee and is now slurping his curry laksa, while Uncle Roger went and bought a plate of yam rice!!!

See? After all the power mee, he still had room for yam rice!!

We had finished our breakfast!!!! All polished off!! We had no more space for soft boiled eggs, kaya and toast, the other popular kopi tiam breakfast food!
