Shantou people share the same culture with other Teochew. The tea-drinking tradition widely practised in town is a classic instance. According to China Daily, Shantou people "drink more tea than anyone else in China, in total 700 million yuan (US$87.5 million) each year".


Many famous Chinese come from Shantou or their ancestral home is Shantou.

Teochew culture


Most residents are linguistically Teochew ,speak Teochew on a daily basis and practise Teochew culture and living mainly in Chaoyang District (潮陽區) and Chaonan District (潮南區),

Teochew people also commonly refer to each other as ga gi nang (家己人; Mandarin: jiajiren) which means 'our own people'.


Chaozhou Dialect (潮州話), in/through which Teochew culture is conveyed, is considered one of the oldest Chinese dialects for it preserves many elegant and refined features from ancient Chinese that have been lost in some counterparts. It is spoken by roughly 10 million people in Chaoshan and more than 5 million outside the Chinese mainland.

I feel bad that i wont be passing on any Teochew...

I just aim to learn Mandarin and thats they best i can do.

It's all right, not many people can speak Teo Chew now, or for that matter, the Chinese dialects.
Mandarin is just fine!!
