7.9.10 Duty in School: I visited Rex Theatre at Petaling Street

Rex Theatre
Exploring Petaling Street, I was excited to see this on the wall: REX CINEMA!!!

Eversince Rex was abandoned I was not able to locate it now I found it at Lorong Sultan 3
With undignified toilet signage on top!
Old, ugly, bare and stripped off its glory days
As usual, the hodge podge of colourful umbrellas that is Petaling Street
what does it serve as now? Why must stand alone cinemas be outdated?
Read the above to get an idea of fond memories that other people have (I am not a KL girl, I go to Rex in Batu Pahat only).
Rex Cinema in Batu Pahat, opposite Odeon in Jalan Jenang, just a stone's throw from where I lived.

The original Rex Theatre burned down in the early 1970s and a new single screen, 1100-seat theater was erected in its place in 1976. The newer Rex's auditorium is not only larger, but it contains a balcony.

Later, the Rex became the first cinema in Malaysia to have a DTS sound system in 1993 in conjunction with the opening of Jurassic Park. The front foyer was revamped in 1995 and computerized ticketing was installed. Once operated by the Shaw Brothers, it has since been leased to Golden Screen Cinemas.

The Rex may be on the endangered list as several other older theaters have closed in the area. Although they are profitable, most operators are pushing for newer multiplexes.

Fond memories of the Rex when I lived in KL in 1985-6 and seeing films such as Terms of Endearment and A Passage to India there. The booking patterns were always a bit of a shock with films you'd never expect ie Annie Hall, Frances, The King of Comedy in there for 1 or 2 day bookings as well. Needless to say, you would always come out into a Night Market and go into a dark alley nearby for some great fried noodles!

Where i used to hang out during the weekends in the early 80s. Remember watching the silly Police Academy films here as well as Flashdance. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to watch Annie Hall here. This cinema reminds me of the hot, steaming noodles available right at its doorsteps as well as the hustle and bustle of Petaling Street.

Nourishing Soups Like Mum Used to Make

The Hakkas and the Cantonese must have soup everyday for their meals.  I remember when I was young, it was my duty to trot down to the wet market down the road every morning to buy one dollar pork and fifty cents pork ribs. Then I will buy ten cents winter melon or sai yong choi or lotus root or whatever Mum says to buy for that day's soup.  We boil a big pot of soup every day with the pork ribs and have it for lunch AND dinner every day, every time, without fail. The soup gets tastier in the evening because it will have been boiled for a longer time!!!

Then, when I got married and came to stay in Kuala Lumpur, it was not the practice in this family to serve soup.  In fact they do not like soups.  Soup was only made once in a while and for certain occasions only.  Oh, how I miss those soups mum used to make!!!

Now, in the school canteen there is a chap fun stall that serves FREE soup.  Soup of the day will be a surprise, but most certainly, it will be PIPING hot, just like MUM used to make!!!

These are some of the soups free with our rice....
Preserved radish with wolfberries (tua tau chai tng)
ABC soup (carrot, onion and potato soup)
White cloud fungus soup
closer look of the white cloud fungus
seaweed soup
closer view of black seaweed and egg drop soup
water cress(sai yong choi)  with wolfberries
can you see the wolfberries and watercress
an old favourite: lotus root with red dates
ham choi tau fu tong...salted vegetable and tofu soup
everybody's favourite: peanut with chicken feet soup!!!

One Day at the Clinic

EEEKK!!!!
(Have you taken your breakfast yet? If not, finish your soft boiled eggs and drink up your coffee before you look at this picture.  It is a real picture of a real foot that still belongs to someone's leg)
One day at the clinic a mak cik presented this foot and expected the good doctor to work miracles...

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, I was reading the newspaper and I read this story that I want to share with you.
Like the Malay people say.."macam macam kerenah"
