Douglas Lim: Stand up comedy Show at Royal Lake Club, 15 May 2009

On Friday, May 15 2009, we went for Douglas Lim's Stand up comedy dinner and show at the Royal Lake Club. Me and my escort outside the Banquet Hall. Dress code: Lounge Suit for men, smart casual semi formal for ladies. I am dressed in Elle top and pants, with my trusty Carlo Rino bag and Charles Keith platform wedges from Vivo City, Singapore.

Douglas Lim and his special brand of "china man" humour. He is not so well known outside of Malaysia and he was last seen in a local sit-com: Kopitiam.

He touched on a lot of Malaysian politics, and poked fun at the local polticians' goofs and gaffs.

He also made spoofs of the three races...all in all quite harmless good fun!

I caught a shot of him running towards the podium after his introduction.

Before the show started, I headed for the Ladies and saw him standing at the offing, waiting for his cue and excitedly asked for a pix with him! His manager (a stylish lady took it for us)

dessert: Baked Philadelphia cheesecake

Ken's main course: pan seared sirloin beef with asparagus pink pepper and corn sauce

my mains: grilled red snapper with olive oil and Balsemic vinegar

the menu

we enjoyed our dinner...not as lavish as the Expat's Wine dinner though

RM80 for member, RM100 for Ken (he is considered non-member) expensive or not?

from my son:

On Friday night went for dinner and stand up comedy by Douglas Lim, one of the cast of Kopitiam from way back at Lake Club. Events at the club would always mean a chance to rub shoulders with Datuks and foreigners which is fun. Everybody is always very warm and friendly. I will admit that it was not as funny as i expected it to be but funny enough. He made a lot of jokes on race, government servants, Singaporeans, the situation in Perak, Chua Soi Lek, Amber Chia and Najib.

The final and presumably the punchline of the night was a joke about how he wished he could be Najib not because he had all that power, but because he could drive his car on Jalan Tun Razak at 20km/h while going left, right, left and right again until somebody would drive up next to his car, unwind the window, and scream, "Your father's road ah?".

Cast iron wok vs non stick kuali

This is the brand of the cast iron woks which are now quite scarce.....

ordered new cast iron woks from Yong Heng Batu Pahat because it was  too troublesome to buy them in KL (lack of parking, traffic jam, etc).  In any case, it is difficult to find shops that still stock these woks. They are so cheap! Only RM28 for the 46cm one and RM32 for the 48 cm. The name of the shop is printed there so you can look for it in Batu Pahat.

Uncle Terry had to deliver this new MyVi to Benny his brother in Kuala Lumpur, so brought the woks to me from Batu Pahat.

Uncle Terry at my  house. He kindly collected and delivered the woks to me at my house.

Here they are: two new old fashioned cast iron woks (18 inches and 19 inches), quite rare now in modern times.

They will  replace my expensive RM100 over non stick kwali  (I had to collect points to buy this wok at Parkson)
The new woks were also to replace the old cast iron wok that served us so well, but  it has grown thin.

Luckily this brand still makes cast-iron woks...my 90 yr old father-in-law likes to use these.

I actually fought with my FIL over this wok...he did not like my red wok, he says it is too flimsy

and fancy, but the old wok is now worn and needed to be replaced.

When the woks came,he was so happy he took it to his workstation and started to smoothen the edges.

Isn't his work station awesome??

It has soldering and welding facilities and would put any Kemahiran Hidup (Living Skills...a subject taught in Malaysia) laboratory to shame.

He is scraping the rough edges of the wok that can cut you. Next, he sandpapered the interior of the wok to get rid of the black colour and remove some of the iron remnants.

BTW he was so enthusiastic..he overdid the sandpapering!!! The wok now had a miniscule hole cos he scraped away the iron pastings over the holes!!!!

What it's like to be parents of a Tween and 2 Twenty-Somethings

As parents of a tween and two twenty-somethings, life can swing from one end of the pendulum to another. For one, you cannot run away from High School Musical, Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers. For another, you have to fork out large sums of money to pay for college fees of the college going kid, and to endure work gripes of the eldest working girl.

So it was that we found ourselves in the cinema to watch HSM3 (High School Musical 3). Imagine 2 oldies surrounded by toddlers, then we found that we were not alone, these "toddlers" had managed to drag their parents to the show too.
