Chilli Crabs for dinner

For our special guests Sue and Steve, we bought 2 kg of live crabs and proceeded to slaughter them for dinner!!

all tied up because you cannot underestimate the power of them pincers

once they get you in their vice grip, they can make a grown man cry

here comes the cruel part: de-legging them

(got de-bone, so got de-leg, right? please don't mind my Manglish)

the cruellest part though is not on camera, the part that got the stake through their vital core

she will now remove the carapace

then proceed to disembowel them

(also not caught on camera, I got sqeamish and queasy)

life and limb lost,

claws are hammered and rinsed

scrubbed off their vitality and destined for the pot next (or kwali because I like to use the wok), I did the frying, and I made sure there was enough "wok-hei".

we all tucked into chilli crabs ala Singapore!!!!

Ingredients for Singapore Chilli Crab:

1 lb (450g) mud crabs or soft shelled crabs
4 tbsp plain flour if using soft shelled crabs
3 tbsp vegetable oil*
8 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
8 fresh red chilli, roughly chopped
1 egg
2 spring onions (scallions), cut into finger length
1 tsp freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice
1 small bunch coriander plant (cilantro)

*For soft-shelled crabs, oil for deep frying

Mix together for Sauce

1 cup of water, 5 tbsp tomato catsup, 1 1/2 to 3 tbsp
sugar, or according to taste, 1 1/2 tsp cornflour, 1 tsp
pounded brown preserved soya beans or dark miso
(optional), 1/4 tsp salt

Method

Heat the oil in a wok or shallow saucepan over high
heat.
Add garlic and stir-fry for 1 minute.
Add the chilli, stir-fry till fragrant. For mud crabs, add
at this stage. Fry well till shells start turning red, add
sauce ingredients stir well, cover with lid and simmer
till shells are red.
Break eggs into the wok and streak with a fork, simmer
till cooked. Squeeze lime juice over and stir in
scallions.
For soft-shelled crabs, cut each crab into four, dry well,

dredge in flour and deep fry till golden brown and
crispy. Make the sauce as above, but omit the mud
crabs.
Toss soft shelled crabs in sauce just before serving.

This unofficial ‘national dish’ is usually prepared with fresh

succulent crabs in a hearty, sweet and spicy gravy and is

best eaten with your fingers! Mop up the mouth-watering

gravy with white bread or Chinese mantou (buns).

Monkeys of Kuala Selangor

We took Steve to the Kuala Selangor Taman Malawati Park to meet the monkeys.

There are at least three species here, among them the silver leaf monkey

Silver leaf monkeys are also known as silvered langurs. There are quite a number of leaf monkey specie in tropical zones around the world and Bukit Melawati (Melawati Hill) is home for this particular species scientifically known as Trachypithecus cristatus of sub-family Cercopithecidae.

furry, large of built always wear a whimsical and melancholic look, it sizes you up in a single gaze and return a vacant stare

loving and motherly, she cuddles her young and brings up one baby at a time, giving it her undivided devoation

"Another unique characteristic of these langurs is that their infants spot a bright orange colour that will last for about three months before their silvery grey colours begin to become dominant. I got the chance to catch a glimpse of a new-born infant in such contrasting colour clinging to its mother."

others treat high tension wires as their playground

yet others stay close to mom, this is a different specie

while many others enjoy the company of humans

Music festival cancelled after drug overdose deaths, say FMFA organizers.

Six die of drug overdose at music festival.

Six people have died while three others are in critical condition due to methamphetamine overdose at the Future Music Festival Asia 2014 at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

The nine, ages from 21 to 28, collapsed during Friday’s event after consuming drugs at around 1.30am.

One person died on the spot in Bukit Jalil while another died on the way to the hospital. Four others died at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC ) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM).

The six, who died were identified as Kamal Zekry Kamal Basha, 22, Victor Wong E Hern, 26, Sabreena Kamaruddin, 21, M.Suresh, 28, Syazana Sohaime, 23, and Nor Faizza Mohd Wazir, 27.

Police have already closed the roads leading to Stadium Bukit Jalil and have sealed off some parts of the venue to prevent concert goers from entering the festival grounds.

City police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the nine, ages from 21 to 28, collapsed during Friday’s event after consuming drugs at around 1.30am.

“All tested positive for high levels of drugs and the deaths have been classified as overdose.

“Throughout the two-days we arrested 22 people, three foreigners and seven locals, in possession of narcotics.

“In view of this incident and for the interest of public safety, we have advised the organisers to cancel Saturday’s event. Those who bought tickets should contact the organisers for refunds,” Mohmad said.

A statement on its Facebook page reads: "In the interest of public safety we have heeded the authority’s advice to not proceed with Day-3 of Future Music Festival Asia 2014. This is also to help in the on-going investigation. We appreciate the understanding of all parties and will share updates on this matter as soon as possible.
