Peking Duck Dinner at Chao Yang, Hong Kong.

CHAO YANG FINE DINING (picture from its website)

Through FB I got in touch with Polly (So So) and we arranged to meet on Tuesday night for dinner. Polly is pleasant, accomodating, caring and the best "niece" anyone can wish for!! In spite of her hectic schedule, (she is reading Law) she set aside 23 November to take us out, even though I am not really her aunt! She is the daughter of my sister's husband's first brother in Hong Kong.

Dear auntie m k,

hope you are not too exhausted from work and fun after a couple days in hong kong! i shall hear all about your stories to the peak and how you smuggled two more people to join for the taxi ride, etc, etc :)

i want to let you know the restaurant i booked for tomorrow night just in case your friend angie or you will be interested to know in advance. it is called chao yang it's a chinese cuisine serving northern china food. the place is elegant and vibrant and busy! it is on some top floor of a new shopping mall located in the center of tsim sha tsui. the shopping mall is called i-square. it is right on peking road across nathan road. the shopping mall just opened last christmas! brand new so to speak, or nearly one year old now. the restaurant is a "sister" restaurant of the wu kong restaurant i took 2nd auntie and 2nd uncle to just this march. this new place becomes popular & instant success thanks to the renowned older "sister "restaurant that has long history of serving good food in hong kong. hopefully we will have a nice table tomorrow night overlooking the view of hong kong.

i will meet you 6:30pm at your lobby. again no rush. if you don't mind, we can take a nice stroll along nathan road from your hotel to the restaurant and you can see some part of tsim sha tsui on nathan road. it will be about 15-20 minutes slow-paced walk. let me know if you will be interested to do that.

cheers,
so so

I can take you to temple street night market or women street night market (in mongkok) after dinner on Tuesday if you are not tired. Or to bars to drink in TST or Central if you fancy. It is totally up to you! :)

On Tuesday night as planned we met at the lobby. She took us walking on Tsim Sha Tsui.
No, no, no, I should be taking your photos for you!!! She says.
So me and Angie posed.....it was still bright at 7 when we started walking along the boulevard

Polly is svelte, tall, trendy and looks like a film star! She is still single and available!

My niece. She is Hong Kong born and bred.

She walked us along TST which looked like Singapore's Orchard Road
This reminds me of Champs Elysees in Paris....she says locals do not shop here

She is a total vegetarian and has a slim and lithe figure

Tsim Sha Tsui looks so happening and bustling

These buildings are very old and has been a fixture here since as far as she can remember

Newer designs of buildings have sprung up such as the lighted one behindResidential blocks at least 40 years old

Polly gave us a comprehensive commentary but I could not remember everything, there was just too much! She is such a good guide!

The oldest mosque in Hong Kong....the sixth formers had a day trip here on their last day Tsim Sha Tsui at night...after walking, it was now night..

Polly is a loyal Hong Konger and sells Hong Kong passionately

She was better than a tour guide! She gave not only the names of buildings but info like its history, significance etc!,( her own knowledge and experience).

Beside this station is an oasis of greenery and a big park that is not visible from the road. Wish I had the time and chance to visit that, my students went there though.

I forgot what building this is!
We reached our restaurant, her mother has been patiently waiting because we both waited for each other at different lobbies of the hotel!

Her mother went to the restaurant very early and had booked the window seat, so nice of her.Plus, only those with VIP card can get such seats!

The restaurant was on the 27th floor so the scene was spectacular!

At 8 sharp there was a pyrotechnics display of lights but my camera could not capture it!

Hong Kong people love to eat out, and this place is already so crowded so early, and on a week day tooShe is vegan so she ordered Fox nuts and sugar snap peas with Olive Oil
Shrimps for us

Stuffed tofu with minced vegetables

She had already pre-ordered Peking Duck Our shrimps arrived looking very artistic and aesthetic

These prawns are minimally cooked so that its delicate flavour and appearance are intact and enhanced.
Fox nuts and snap peas....I did not know a young woman like Polly can be a such a committed vegan

 Gourmet dishes

The unusual tofu stuffed with minced vegetables

Wow!!! Peking Duck! This is only my second time. The first was in Johor Bahru with David and Caroline, and Ryan loves Peking DuckTwo types of wrapping for you to put the duck slivers in (this is sesame seed buns)

Crepe to put the duck, sauce and garnishing

With sauce and shredded root vegetables Succulent with crispy skin piqued with piquant sauce
Tai Soh is a youthful looking mum who does swimming at her club and has beautiful complexion
The restaurant is called Chao Yang

Unlike my complexion freckled by sun exposure and wizened by UV rays.

Her mother says Polly is very filial to all her elders: assorted aunties and uncles in HK and Spore. She is caring and does not mind giving old ladies like us her time!
Thanks Polly and Tai Soh!!! Your hospitality is unforgettable and please come to KL soon.

Hong Kong restaurant REVIEW:
Chao Yang
Chinese
$ - $$
Possessing 27th floor wraparound views around half of the whole space, Chao Yang immediately makes it to the top of our “restaurant with kickass day or night vista to impress out-of-town guests” list. And right off the bat, we liked its modern Chinese interior, with soft blue gray tablecloth on the white tables and chairs and charming white ceramic tableware. It serves pan-Northern Chinese fare, and besides the run of the mill dishes like shredded chicken on flat mung bean sheets (the sesame sauce was too much like sugary peanut butter), marinated carp in wine (fragrant) and various dumplings, their menu offers creative contemporary Chinese dishes as well, so do be adventurous. The tofu jiaozi were refreshingly light dumplings of diced vegetables and vermicelli wrapped inside smooth tofu skin. Even more impressive was a dish (a glass vase, actually) of chilled, summer bamboo, which arrived like a flower arrangement, ready to be picked and peeled by hand. Reminiscent of asparagus, the young bamboo shoots took on a floral, aromatic herbal bouquet, as it was marinated with a mixture of herbs, flowers and a bit of light rice vinegar
