There are killings happening every day in Kuala Lumpur. Do people stop going there? So life goes on in Pom Pom...

Despite the recent shooting and kidnapping at the island resort, Taiwanese tourists are still making their way there, seemingly unconcerned over what happened.

Didn’t they know that they were heading to a destination where one of their fellow countrymen had been killed and another abducted, I wondered.

(At about 1am on Friday, Filipino gunmen shot and killed 57-year-old Taiwanese tourist Hsu Li Min and abducted his 58-year-old wife Chang An Wei at Pom Pom Island Resort.]

Pom Pom Island is about a 45-minute boat ride from Semporna town, the gateway to one of the world’s top diving spots — Sipadan Island.

At the arrival hall at Tawau Airport, I had a mild shock when I saw a tour guide holding a sign saying “Pom Pom Island Resort”.

When we asked a tour agent with the resort why it was still open, the man, who was waiting for guests to arrive, shrugged it off.

“There are killings happening every day in
Kuala Lumpur. Do people stop going there?”
he asked.
