Pontian Wong

This is a story of a man who had 3 wives and 13 children.  He named his children after places and a steamship.

9 children were named after places in Pahang:
Wong Pahang
Wong Kwan Tan (Kuantan)
Wong Pekan
Wong Lipis
Wong Raub
Wong Gambang
Wong Beserah
Wong Jelai (small town near Fraser's Hill)
Wong Bentong

1 after a Steamship
Wong Krona (after a steamship that once brought goods from Singapore)

2 were named after rivers
Wong Boo Latt (after the Belat River in Pahang)
Wong Lembing (Lembing River in Pahang)

1 after a district in Johore:
Pontian Wong

who just died.  With her death, retired headmaster Wong Bentong remains the only surviving children of Wong Ah Jang and his 3 wives who named their 13 children after places in Pahang, a district in Johore and a steamship. I am not spinning a yarn in my old age, this is a true story.

Was doing a search on my family tree, and came across your blog post.

I am actually one of the descendants of Wong Ah Jang, through the his son Wong Kwan Tan, and his son, Wong Sei Van.

Thank you for this post and the link to The Star article.

You are welcome, Lu Kenn Wong. You have an impressive lineage, I am awed!

Thanks, but I am quite in awe too. I used to hear the stories as a child, but have met only a small fraction of my distant family members.

I stumbled on this a website called ancestry.com, and liked the idea of mapping out my family tree, hence my search.

I see that you have pictures of Kuantan on your blog. You wouldn't happen to have met any of them would you ?

No, Lu Kenn, I was only in Kuantan for a dance event and I did not meet any of your family members. Would love to meet them though, with you, of course!
