PPSMI to continue for students already in it: DPM

PUTRAJAYA: Those already in the PPSMI system will be allowed to continue learning Maths and Science in English until they complete their studies in Form 5, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
He said this when announcing the soft landing approach to the shift away from PPSMI (Teaching of Science and Maths in English).
Below are highlights of his announcement:
> All Year 2 to Form 5 students who do their Maths and Science in English this year will be allowed to finish their studies in those subjects in English.
> Next year's national school students of Year 3 to Year 6 would be allowed to continue their studies in both subjects in English, Bahasa Malaysia or both.
> Those who have been studying those subjects in Bahasa Malaysia, or both languages, would be allowed to continue studying entirely in Bahasa Malaysia.
> Teaching and learning of both subjects will be done entirely in Bahasa Malaysia in 2016 for primary schools.
> For secondary schools both subjects would be taught fully in Bahasa Malaysia in 2021.

Overrule Muhyiddin, Dr M tells Najib

Peeved with Muhyiddin's decision to abort his brainchild, the former premier tells Najib to hit the brakes on his deputy's plan.
KUALA LUMPUR: In a fresh twist to the PPSMI saga, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s mentor Dr Mahathir Mohamad has asked the former to overturn his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin’s plan to scrap the policy.
He said maintaining PPSMI, which was Mahathir’s brainchild, is good for the country’s future and urged Najib to stop Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, from substituting the policy with the national language instead of English.
“The idea of going back to Bahasa (Malaysia) in (to teach) Mathematics and Science will make us all very backward.
“If it is something for the good of the country, not only the education minister, but everybody can be overridden,” he was quoted as saying in Langkawi by news reports.
Dr M warns of election backlash
Muhyiddin has refused to budge despite calls from concerned parents and lobby groups such as the Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE).
PAGE chairman Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim previously warned that the move to scrap the PPSMI policy will lead to Barisan Nasional losing votes in the upcoming general election.
Mahathir introduced the policy before he stepped down in 2003.

Many pro-PPSMI parents have expressed concern that scrapping the policy will jeopardise their children’s future given English’s importance as the world’s first language.
Muhyiddin, however, said Putrajaya will ensure students remain proficient in English through qualitative strengthening of the subject in schools.
