To the Hakka and Cantonese community, Winter Solstice is big...and they treat it like a new year....
To celebrate, round dumplings with bean paste filling is cooked in sweetened ginger syrup and eaten with family after prayers. It is the last festival of the year before a new year starts.

This must be a new take on the dumplings:  choclolate filling.

In my household which is Teochew (my married family) we
do not celebrate.  I remember my late mother to visit me
shortly after I got married and asked me "Mei Mei, did you
quotong? (celebrate winter solstice) or cho chuek" I realised
then, that winter Solstice had passed and not a round
dumpling passed my lips hehehe....

Winter Solstice is also my only brother's birthday: happy
birthday, Bro, everybody is celebrating with you!!!
